Creating inflatable monsters is not just about Halloween or costume parties. In New York, creating inflatable monsters is becoming an art form as seen in the work of Joshua Allen Harris.

Using ordinary garbage bags, this artist structures them by joining individual pieces together while maintaining airflow throughout the pieces. He then looks for air vents around the city and mounts the pieces above the air vents.

Once the airflow begins, the creatures then inflate and even move about based on the air speeds that are available. They are fascinating to watch and videos of his work abound on YouTube.

From his journey into this realm of art we too can learn lessons about creating inflatable monsters. Start small and use lightweight plastic bags that will need to be cut out into specific shapes.

Since access to air is not from the ground at home, consider mounting the finished products on fans instead. This means that when creating the monsters, it will be necessary to ensure that the air holes are at the top as opposed to the bottom.

Another monster artist receiving accolades for his work is Jason Hackenwerth. Unlike Harris, Hackenwerth uses a combination of ordinary balloons to create huge sculptures with monster-like features. While he designs these monsters for parties and events, it is useful to note that his work has been featured in the Great Hall of Dinosaurs at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History as well.

So as you contemplate self-designed monsters, these may also be created using balloons and it is just a matter of inflating them and joining the balloons to create a creature from the depths of your imagination. This is arguably easier to do that garbage bag monsters but will require some practice.

For parents despairing about what to do with the children during the holidays, it may be a good idea to purchase a variety of balloon shapes and colors and to teach the children how to combine them into various combinations.

Use pictures of monsters available on the internet and challenge the children to try to achieve these designs. Even if they don’t at the end of the day, the amount of air used and balloons popped should keep the children happy and calm for a while.
